Attention, Behaviour and Social-Emotional Development

Children are still learning how to pay attention, manage their impulses, deal with disappointment and get along with other people. Some children pick up these skills quickly. For others, they can take a little longer.

You may notice your child struggling to sit through an activity or finish what they started. Perhaps waiting for their turn is difficult, or a small change to the usual routine leads to a big reaction. They may also find it hard to join other children when they are playing.

It can be frustrating when you see these things happening and aren't sure why. Behaviour is often a sign that a child is finding something difficult. Understanding what is behind it can help you work out what kind of support they might need.

What Parents May Notice

Not every child will have the same difficulties. For some, attention may be the main concern. For others, managing emotions or getting involved in social situations may be harder. There can also be more than one area causing difficulty.

Looking at these patterns together can help give a better understanding of what your child may be experiencing.

How We Can Help

Our team takes time to understand your child's behaviour in the context of their everyday life. We look at the skills that may be getting in the way, rather than focusing on the behaviour alone.

Depending on your child's needs, support may include developmental assessment, behavioural support, parent guidance and the Immersive Development Program (IDP).

The aim is to help children develop skills that they can use in everyday situations, such as staying with an activity, managing their emotions, coping with changes, interacting with others and taking part in routines.
