When Changes to the Routine Feel Hard
You may find that your child becomes very upset when plans change, an activity ends or something doesn't happen the way they expected.
For some children, familiar routines provide a sense of predictability. Moving from one activity to another or dealing with something unexpected can therefore feel much harder than it looks from the outside.

What Parents May Notice
Finds it difficult to move from one activity to another
Becomes distressed when plans change unexpectedly
Has difficulty handling disappointment
Struggles with everyday transitions, such as leaving home or ending screen time
Cries, freezes or resists during transitions
Why This Can Happen
Children may need more time to shift their attention from one activity to another. They may also not yet have the language to explain why a change feels difficult.
Building flexibility and emotional regulation takes practice.
What Can Help
Give your child some warning before a transition rather than changing activities suddenly. Keeping routines predictable and explaining what will happen next can make changes easier to manage.
Talking about emotions as they happen can also help your child gradually develop the words they need to communicate what they are feeling.
