When Your Child Needs to Keep Moving
Some children just seem to have a hard time sitting still.
They may jump off the sofa, spin in circles, crash into cushions, rock while sitting, or keep getting up when everyone else is settled. You might also notice them chewing on their clothes, pencils, or fingers.
It's not always about being “naughty” or not listening. Sometimes, your child may be looking for more movement or sensory input because it helps them feel settled and ready to take part.

What Parents May Notice
Jumps, spins, runs or deliberately crashes into things
Rocks, fidgets or shakes their legs when sitting
Wants to swing, climb or move much of the time
Chews on fingers, sleeves, toys or other objects
Bites or sucks their fingers
Finds sitting through meals, stories or other activities difficult
Gets restless or overwhelmed when they have to stay in one place
How We Help
First, we look at when your child seeks movement and what happens before and after it. This helps us understand what they may be trying to get from the movement.
Occupational therapy can then use movement and sensory-based activities that fit into your child's day. We can also help you find practical ways to build movement into routines at home, rather than constantly telling your child to sit still.
